Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly allow Fernando Llorente to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.
Several Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to comment on reports from The Sun over the weekend which suggested that Spurs still plan to allow Fernando Llorente to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.
Llorente has enjoyed a fantastic second season with Mauricio Pochettino’s men. He may not be the most prolific player in the squad, but there is no question that he has scored some vital goals during the campaign.
The 34-year-old’s goal proved decisive in the Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City, and it was his introduction in Amsterdam that set the stage for Spurs’ incredible second-half comeback in the semi-final against Ajax.
But despite his form, The Sun reports that Tottenham still plan to let Llorente leave on a free transfer when his deal runs out at the end of the season. And that has prompted a strong reaction on Twitter.
There are plenty of supporters who believe that Llorente – who earns £75,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – has earned a one-year extension. He may not provide a huge amount of goals, but he plays an important role as Harry Kane’s understudy, and replacing the Spaniard is not going to be an easy task.
And while there are some who seem to accept the decision to apparently let him go, several have lauded Llorente for what he has done this season and believe that he deserves to be remembered extremely fondly.
If he can help Spurs go on and win the Champions League next month, perhaps even those who would like the forward to stay would have to admit that that may be the ideal way for him to say goodbye.
