Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min is in action at the Asian Games.
Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a superb 3-0 win over Manchester United on Monday night, and they did it without Son Heung-min being available to themselves.
Attackers Harry Kane and Lucas Moura more than made up for Son’s absence as they found the net against United, with Moura particularly stepping up with two goals.
With three wins from three, Spurs are in fine form to start the season, and they will be excited to get Son back in their squad, given that he has missed the last two games given that he is at the Asian Games.
After a group stage exit from the World Cup, there is a lot riding on the Asian Games for Son. If he can clinch a gold medal in the tournament, then he will earn exemption from mandatory military service, which would see him leave for two years inside the next 18 months.
Spurs unsurprisingly allowed Son to go and play in the tournament in a bid to earn that exemption, and after a defeat to Malaysia but their tournament in doubt, South Korea are hitting top form.
A 2-0 win over Iran was followed by a dramatic 4-3 extra time win over Uzbekistan, and beating Vietnam 3-1 earlier today means that Son and South Korea are now into the final of the competition.
South Korea will meet Japan or the United Arab Emirates in the final, and Son now faces the most important game of his life, both personally and for his career, with a huge 90 minutes coming up on Saturday.
Son’s extended tournament means that he definitely won’t be available for Spurs against Watford this weekend, but Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to cheer Son on, urging him to make Spurs proud – though some are worried that Son and South Korea will ‘bottle’ the final, which would leave Spurs and Son rocked.
