According to Gerard Romero, Tottenham Hotspur have made an offer to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona.
The Dutch winger arriving at Tottenham would be interesting for a number of reasons, but one intriguing aspect of this rumour is the effect this signing could have on Steven Bergwijn.
Bergwijn knows Depay from the Dutch national team, and based on their Instagram activity, they’re close friends.
Indeed, Depay is often seen complimenting and encouraging Bergwijn on social media, while the Spurs winger is also a huge admirer of Depay.
When he was coming through at PSV, Bergwijn stated that he actually looked up to Depay, and now they could be teammates at Tottenham.
The arrival of Depay could really help Bergwijn find another gear at Spurs. After all, close relationships in the dressing room are so important to players finding form and being comfortable on the pitch.

Look at Spurs as a prime example, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen were at their best when they were playing together, and after Vertonghen left, Alderweireld’s form fell of a cliff.
The same can be said of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, they were two players who knew each other incredibly well and got on behind the scenes, but once Eriksen departed, Alli’s Spurs career went off the rails.
Bergwijn has had a tumultuous time at Tottenham, he’s had managerial changes, a pandemic and injuries to contend with, but perhaps signing one of his close friends and Dutch teammates would help him find a level of stability at Spurs that could see him finally reach that next level.
