Tottenham Hotspur absolutely need a couple of new centre-backs this summer.

Spurs’ defence isn’t terrible, but it could be a lot better and Jose Mourinho needs new central defenders, with Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez being quite erratic, and Toby Alderweireld turning 32 earlier this month.

One player who Tottenham are linked to is Southampton powerhouse Jannik Vestergaard [The Mirror] and if it materialises, he could be the Lilywhites’ answer to a certain Virgil van Dijk.

He joined the Saints in 2018 as a long-term replacement for the now-Liverpool stalwart, who had moved to Anfield six months earlier during the January transfer window.

And Vestergaard, like Van Dijk, would bring a huge physical presence to Tottenham’s back four by virtue of the fact that he stands at 6’6.

But an increased aerial asset and history with Southampton isn’t where the similarities end.

Much like the Liverpool defender, Vestergaard also has an eye for goal and has scored three Premier League goals this season which, for context, is more than Dier, Sanchez, Alderweireld and Joe Rodon combined.

At 28, Vestergaard, who also has a penchant for a long ball from defence, is in the prime of his career and if the price is right, this could be a fine addition for Tottenham.
