Tottenham have been presented with a unique opportunity in the transfer market.

Marcus Edwards is a player Spurs sold a few years ago, but they’ve held onto a hefty sell-on clause since letting the winger leave for Portugal.

Interestingly, Spurs are now reportedly keen on bringing Edwards back, according to Record, and Alasdair Gold thinks that due to Spurs’ sell-on clause, they will be able to get him for a bargain fee.

“Is Marcus Edwards coming back? How do I put this. Economically it makes sense because Spurs have that deal that is around 40 to 45 per cent sell-on clause. So essentially they’d get him for half-price,” Gold said

Of course, there is a question of whether or not Spurs do indeed need Edwards at this point, but with this sort of opportunity in front of them, they should sign him anyway if only for the value they’d be getting.

If Spurs sign Edwards for half of his market value, they could then do one of three things – sell him on themselves for his true value and include another sell-on clause, getting the best of both worlds. Loan him out and hope his value increases further, or they could actually use him in their squad.

Regardless of what Spurs choose to do, there’s really no way of losing if they do go out and sign Edwards.

Of course, bringing in a player with the ultimate goal of turning a profit is a bit sleazy, but we’ve seen this before and Spurs should know about it.

The most notable example was Barcelona using their buy-back clause to bring Emerson Royal back from Real Betis before promptly selling him to Spurs for a hefty profit, and Spurs could do something similar, albeit not identical, here.

It may not be the most honest move of all-time, but now, more than ever before, football is about business and re-signing Edwards to sell him for a profit would be a savvy business move.
