With the transfer window now closed, Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth and Chelsea all made headline moves that are viewed as smart business.

Transfer deadline day came with the expectation that a number of clubs would make movements in the final 24 hours that would define the whole summer transfer period, and it did not disappoint.

While Stoke City made their final 24 hours about bringing players in, Manchester City were more about clearing room, with Joe Hart, Eliaquim Mangala, Samir Nasri and Wilfried Bony all leaving on loan.

But when the dust settled, three clubs stood tall and were the talk of deadline day and we take a look at those sides that did the best business on deadline day.

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs’ big signing of the entire transfer window came on deadline day when they completed the £30 million move for Newcastle United’s Moussa Sissoko. But the drama in the signing came when Spurs made their move for the player in the final two hours. Up until that point it looked as though Sissoko was heading to Everton, but with Mauricio Pochettino’s side matching Everton’s offer, they swooped in to trump their move for the Frenchman.

Sissoko is an enigma and you never quite know what you are going to get. If Spurs get the Sissoko we saw at Euro 2016 then it will be money well spent and will add further proof that in the transfer market Pochettino is clear what and who he wants and needs. But if you end up with the Sissoko that was a passenger as Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League, then Spurs will have shown again that their transfer policy needs assessing in the same way it did after they spent all that Gareth Bale money.

The Sissoko signing on deadline day was one that came about early on during the day, but at periods the deal appeared dead and buried, and the Frenchman is the signing that supporters will have wanted to see. During Euro 2016, Sissoko was one of France’s best players and once he featured he looked a threat throughout the tournament, and it is this Sissoko that will excite White Hart Lane. Spurs need a player that is a more direct and aggressive wide player from what they already have, and in Sissoko they have an alternative to Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen.

But in addition to bringing in Sissoko, Spurs also confirmed the long awaited transfers of Olympique Marseille’s Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and the loan signing of Pau Lopez from Espanyol. The signing of N’Koudou has been weeks in the making and was confirmed on deadline day with fours hours to go. Spurs fans had been teased over the last few days on Twitter and through rumours that the player would sign but with only hours to go in the summer transfer window, Spurs completed the transfer. But while N’Koudou was the signing fans were looking to shout about, they now have a different scenario altogether, centred around Moussa Sissoko.

Bournemouth AFC

Bournemouth made one major move on transfer deadline day and it was a move that could ultimately make their season. The signing of Jack Wilshere is the clearest indication of where Eddie Howe’s side want to be and shows just how far they have come in the past six years.

Wilshere has fallen behind Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny in the Arsenal midfield pecking order and Arsene Wenger granted him permission to seek a loan move to get more game-time after being dropped from Sam Allardyce’s first England squad.

Wilshere needs game-time after two years of persistent injuries that are beginning to devastate his career. Having made only 14 appearances in 2014/15 and a staggering three last season, the Arsenal midfielder needs to move to resurrect his career. Bournemouth, as Wilshere may expect, could be the perfect place to do this, with Howe’s style of play meaning everything Bournemouth do will go through Wilshere.

The signing by Bournemouth is a major coup, and with a number of clubs such as AS Roma and AC Milan keen to bring Wilshere in on deadline day, it shows just where Bournemouth may be heading and it could turn out to be the making of their season and a master stroke by Eddie Howe.

Chelsea FC

Chelsea’s sensational move to resign David Luiz from Paris Saint Germain was a bolt out the blue and only came to light 24 hours before the transfer deadline. The move itself materialised after it was reported by that it was Luiz himself who forced the deal through after hearing that Chelsea were keen to make a move for the defender.

The move for Luiz is seen as a strange one – hardly surprising considering his last stint at The Bridge was marred by defensive mistakes. But the returning Luiz is not the same player as the one that left. While he still makes mistakes, this is a more mature player and with a manager like Antonio Conte there is a belief that the Italian will stamp out any slip-ups and keep Luiz grounded enough to desist from roaming into the opposition’s box at any – and every – given opportunity.

But where the signing of Luiz really makes sense is that Conte believes in a back three, and with Luiz alongside John Terry and Gary Cahill you have a defender who can play the ball out of defence – something Conte has become accustomed to thanks to the footballing talent of Leonardo Bonucci.

Whilst the singing of Luiz is the headline-grabbing move, Chelsea have also made two other significant transfers on deadline day. The addition of Marcus Alonso from Fiorentina was expected after rumours had circulated for days that Conte would make a bid for the former Bolton player, and with Chelsea looking to wrap up their transfer deadline day activity, they secured a deal that took Juan Cuadrado to Juventus on a three-year loan deal.
