Spurs’ attacking woes: Defender trumps Lamela, Eriksen & co in attacking stat

Tottenham suffered another disappointing home result against West Brom, with creative problems stunting spells of strong possession.

Tottenham fans were left smarting following Sunday’s 1-0 home loss to West Bromwich Albion, a side that had yet to register a Premier League win this season before the match at White Hart Lane.

Those associated with the club will likely join supporters in their disappointment in how little Spurs threatened the Midlands side, who were bottom coming into the game.

Despite enjoying 63% possession, the Lilywhites registered just one shot on target, and just seven overall – not the form of Champions League challengers.

Spurs’ inability to create any openings from a midfield position is evident in the above statistics, which show that young centre back Eric Dier had more successful final third passes, overall touches and accurate passes in the game than any other Spurs player, despite continuing to play out of position at right back.

That the 20-year-old was ahead of often vaunted midfield trio Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela and Mousa Dembele will be of real cause for concern for Pochettino, who will be scratching his head at how the home team were unable to open up a stubborn Baggies defence.

It is the second game in a row that Spurs have failed to score, after drawing blank in a 0-0 draw away to Partizan Belgrade last Thursday, and now finding themselves in a run of 4 games without a win, Daniel Levy will likely be wondering why he didn’t dip into the transfer market to bring in another centre forward before the transfer window closed recently.
