Spurs and Everton reportedly want Kieran Tierney, but Tottenham shouldn’t fear battle

Tottenham Hotspur are being linked with Kieran Tierney once again.

Tottenham Hotspur ended the summer transfer window without any new signings, and that means that speculation is already surrounding potential January transfer targets.

Spurs were left frustrated in the market, but they have at least started the Premier League season with two wins, beating Newcastle United and Fulham so far.

Now, The Mirror report that Tottenham are eyeing up Celtic left back Kieran Tierney, and are hoping to land him in a cut-price deal after the Bhoys failed to reach the Champions League group stage.

Tierney, 21, has become one of Europe’s top young left backs during his time with Celtic, having become a first-team regular with the Bhoys over the last three years.

The report does though note that Everton are keen on Tierney, but Tottenham shouldn’t be fearing a battle with the Toffees for any reason – especially with Lucas Digne’s move going through this summer.

Everton splashed the cash to sign left back Digne from Barcelona, and the Frenchman looks to be the successor to Leighton Baines in due time, and whilst the Toffees may seek cover for Digne in the future, Tierney is far too good to be that player.

Meanwhile, Spurs can offer Champions League football – something he won’t have with Celtic and wouldn’t get with Everton – and the path to first-team football isn’t quite as complicated, as Danny Rose looks to be leaving, and Spurs don’t have quite as much committed into Davies as Everton do with Digne money-wise.

Tierney would be the ideal competition and eventual replacement for Davies, especially as he has the same versatility to play at left back, left wing back and even as a left-sided centre back for Mauricio Pochettino, whilst Tierney would surely be aware that Digne has joined Everton with the promise of first-team football.

Everton would no doubt love to have Tierney and Digne competing in the future, but a move to Tottenham makes so much more sense for the Scotland international if Rose leaves – and Spurs shouldn’t fear losing out to the Toffees even after their summer of woe in the transfer market.
