The young defender is said to be at something of an impasse between a renewal and a transfer, with Newcastle United among those interested.
According to a report from Portuguese newspaper Record, Sporting Lisbon centre-back Ruben Semedo is facing a defining summer in his career, with a decision to make regarding a new contract at his current club or a summer transfer.
The player is already tied to Sporting until the summer of 2022, but the latest report claims it is either or in terms of a fresh deal until 2023 (and potentially an increased release clause) or a summer exit with Newcastle United one of a number of English clubs tracking his progress.
The offer of a new deal is said to have been put to their player, with Sporting awaiting his decision, although the report goes on to suggest that if that is rejected and the Portuguese side get an offer too good to refuse this summer, they would not stand in the player’s way.
Newcastle need quality reinforcements in a number of key areas this summer, including the centre of defence, and Semedo fits the bill.
The 23-year-old has appeared 48 times for Sporting to date, including 31 times this season, and he looks set for a very bright future.
Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez will know there are plenty of exciting options out there, but it is picking the right ones to esnure the Magpies’ return to the top flight is a memorable one for all the right reasons.
Only time will tell what Semedo decides, but if the latest report is to be believed, it could be as simple as choosing to continue his career at Sporting or taking the plunge and moving to England.
