Speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Dean Jones has been previewing the upcoming Premier League season, and he’s been discussing Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs come into this campaign with an element of excitement surrounding the club. They had a fantastic finish to last season, they’ve got one of the best managers in the world and their summer transfer business has been brilliant to say the least.

The likes of Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison are all exciting additions who could make their debuts this weekend, but according to Jones, one new signing who won’t be starting vs Southampton is Clement Lenglet.

Indeed, the journalist has spoken to someone connected with the club and he’s heard that Ben Davies will retain his spot as Spurs’ left centre-back to begin the season.

What’s been said?

Jones shared what he knows about Lenglet not starting ahead of Davies.

“I do still feel that they are lacking something. Lenglet as a defensive signing wasn’t their first choice but they’ve ended up with him and I don’t know how good he is anymore,” Jones said.

“He won’t start the season probably, I spoke to somebody who told me that Ben Davies will probably start as the left-sided centre-back at the start of the season.”

Earned it

Davies is going to start the season at Spurs’ first-choice centre-back on that left side, and to be honest, he deserves to.

The Welshman genuinely barely put a single foot wrong in that role last term after the arrival of Antonio Conte, and it would have been very harsh to have dropped him at this point.

Yes, an upgrade could be made there, and hopefully Lenglet is eventually the man who can take Spurs’ defence to that next level, but, for now, it’s Davies’ spot to lose.

Lenglet will get his shot, but it sounds like Conte trusts Davies to continue his good work to begin the season.
