The four major championships in golf have been a staple of the sport for over 100 years.
Winning the major events elevates you to legendary status in the sport. Justin Rose once said that a major win is worth 10 wins on the PGA Tour, and these are the events that every golf fan is locked into throughout the year.
But there has been talk, for decades, about whether another tournament should become golf’s fifth major championship. Some spoke for years about adding the Australian Open to give the majors a more international feel.
Another event proposed for this is the legendary Players Championship, as the PGA Tour looks to claim one of the majors. It’s already an iconic event with a major feel, so it’s a worthy contender.
And speculation has once again risen after a recent video from the PGA Tour.

PGA Tour hints at Players Championship becoming the fifth major
The PGA Tour recently posted a promotional video for The Players Championship, and people noticed a line in the video that hints at the Players becoming the fifth major championship.
The video states, “March is going to be major.” It might seem like a throwaway line, but the caption of the video from The Players’ official account? “March is going to be …” They clearly want attention drawn to that line.
The PGA Tour, despite LIV Golf’s best efforts, is at the center of the golfing universe, and they’re clearly keen to take ownership of one of the major championships.
But this is a controversial topic for golf traditionalists, and one that has split opinion among fans and players.
Lee Westwood and Michael Kim disagree on The Players becoming a major
This video sparked widespread debate in the golf world, and players weighed in. Michael Kim gave the argument in the event’s favour, saying he’d rather win this event than one of the majors.
The PGA Tour winner posted to X, “I’d honestly be prouder of winning the Players over the PGA. (As if I get to choose I know haha).”
Meanwhile, LIV golfer Lee Westwood pointed out that three of the four majors are currently played in America, so golf would do well to expand internationally, rather than add another major in the States.
He posted, “Another major in the US is just what golf needs.
“But as a test run ask Rolapp to invite the top 15 off Liv to play in this years players. Let me know how that goes.
“If anything the PGA should be rotated around the world and played in the US once every 4 years.”
An international touring major is actually an incredible idea, so perhaps that’s the change golf needs to make instead of adding another major to the schedule.
