Well, Steve Bruce has left Newcastle United.
The writing had been on the wall for the 60-year-old manager after Saudi Public Investment Fund completed their takeover at the club 13 days ago.
Bruce admitted to The Daily Mail at the time that he feared for his future as Newcastle boss.
And the club have this morning announced a parting of ways, with the Magpies sitting in the Premier League’s relegation zone after eight games.
When Bruce’s side lost to Tottenham at St James’s Park on Sunday, it was very much a case of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ any longer for Bruce.
Here’s how Specsavers reacted to the announcement on Twitter:
Who’s replacing Steve Bruce?
In the short term, Graeme Jones has been placed in charge of Newcastle’s senior players on an interim basis.
Longer term, a number of names are linked to the post and none more prominent right now than Paulo Fonseca.
The Portuguese coach is available after being sacked by Roma last summer.
Fonseca, who also managed Shakhtar Donetsk, was being lined up by Spurs after leaving Italy but the North Londoners elected against hiring him.
Newcastle are away to Crystal Palace on Saturday and it looks very likely that Jones will take charge of that one.
But with United 19th in the Premier League and winless from eight games, the club’s hierarchy will want a permanent successor named as soon as possible for the sake of stability as they plot their escape from the danger zone.
