Aston Villa would offer Burnley goalkeeper Heaton regular first-team football – but he’s a big fan of Premier League runners-up Liverpool

Tom Heaton of Burnley celebrates during the Premier League match between Burnley FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers at Turf Moor on March 30, 2019 in Burnley, United Kingdom.

Tom Heaton might have started his career at Manchester United but that has not stopped the goalkeeper from making his admiration for Liverpool very clear.

Speaking to Lancs Live in March before his Burnley side were beaten 4-2 at Anfield, the England international was keen to pay tribute to Jurgen Klopp’s side who, at the time, had the Premier League title firmly in their sights.

“Obviously it’s steeped in history, a massive football club. It’s always a special one going to places like (Anfield),” Heaton said.

“They’re a top, top side, with top individuals.”

At 33 and having rejected a new contract with Burnley, surely Heaton would be tempted to join one of the giants of the world game with his time at the top level running down.

According to The Mail, Liverpool are battling Aston Villa for a goalkeeper who has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable shot-stoppers in the last few seasons.

And Heaton has a real dilemma on his hands.

A move to Aston Villa would see the veteran installed as Dean Smith’s number one. At Liverpool, however, he would be second choice at best with Brazil star Alisson Becker and Belgium international Simon Mignolet providing competition.

But Heaton will be fully aware that he might never again be offered a move as big as this.
