Micah Richards has stated that Arsenal transfer target, Darwin Nunez, is a ‘special player’, as he told CBS Sports.

The TV pundit added that Nunez is ‘one of the top strikers’ in Europe after he scored for Benfica during their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Even though Benfica were outclassed by the Reds in their own backyard, they did get a glimmer of hope through their thriving striker.

Following a cross from the right, Nunez pounced on an error from Ibrahima Konate to pull a goal back for his team, although, heading into the second leg at Anfield, they still have their work cut out.

Nonetheless, with Nunez a transfer target for many teams across Europe, including Arsenal, many would have tuned in to see how he would fare against some of the best defenders in the world.

Richards is certainly a fan of the 22-year-old, who might just be a Premier League player next season.

“They have got a star in Nunez,” said Richards. “He is a special player and has scored a hatful of goals this season.

“When we were comparing him with Haller, in their last Champions League game against Ajax, he was the one who turned up.

“Nunez has shown again against Liverpool why he is one of the top strikers.”

It has been pretty well-documented that Arsenal are searching for that number nine in the summer.

Whether Alexandre Lacazette heads for the exit door or signs a new contract, another new face has to come in.

Securing Champions League football at the end of the season will help, as Nunez would fit the style of play being deployed by Mikel Arteta.

The Uruguay striker has scored 28 goals from 35 matches in all competitions, including five in the Champions League and 21 in the league.
