Manchester City youngster Gavin Bazunu has lauded fellow goalkeeper Ederson Moraes for the impact the Brazilian has had on the role.

Speaking to the Independent, the Republic of Ireland international praised the City number one for evolving the goalkeeping role into what it is now. Ederson was the first real example of a shot-stopper who is also excellent with his feet.

Since Ederson’s £35m arrival to Manchester in 2017, the Premier League has seen an explosion of keepers who are quality with both their hands and their feet. Jordan Pickford, Alisson Becker and Hugo Lloris are all similar to the City star on the ball.

Indeed, the Pep Guardiola signing has made a huge impact on how goalkeepers play not just in England but in Europe as a whole. And for Bazunu, he has taken inspiration for the impact Ederson had made in the game since landing in England.

The on-loan Portsmouth goalkeeper said: “He’s a special goalkeeper. He’s changed the way the game is being playe. And I definitely take a lot of learning from the way he plays.

“Obviously I want to have my own build. But the way he has changed modern goalkeeping, there’s a lot of things, a lot of positives I can take from his game and try to add that to mine.”

Indeed, Ederson’s impact on how goalkeepers should play has been big, to say the least. Ever since Manuel Neuer established himself as a shot-stopper who is excellent on the ball, the concept has taken some time to become more mainstream.

However, with the Brazilian keeper, many more players in the position are now taking extra priority with how they can control and move the ball rather than how can they prevent it from hitting the back of the net.
