Paul Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (26/12/20 at 2:05 pm) that the ‘special’ Roberto Firmino needs ‘more confidence’ in front of goal for Liverpool.

The outspoken TV pundit thinks Firmino’s brilliant one touch and finish during Liverpool’s 7-0 hammering of Crystal Palace last time out is a potential contender for goal of the season.

It has been an up and down season for Firmino, who has struggled to spark Liverpool’s attacks as much as he would have liked, but in recent weeks, he has well and truly turned it on.

Merson shared his thoughts on Firmino and how one of his goals at Selhurst Park left him very impressed.

“That’s not far off goal of the season,” said Merson. “I say that because you wouldn’t see that on a Sunday morning. You will not see that.

“The touch and the finish. And at pace. He started the move as well. You will see 30 yard top corners. You will see them every Sunday up the park, but you won’t see that.

“That is someone who is a special footballer, who just needs a bit more confidence in front of goal and it was a phenomenal goal. Unbelievable.”

When Firmino is singing to his own tune then there’s no stopping his rhythm because the £29 million signing [BBC Sport] is a unique and unstoppable footballer in that regard.

The problem with Firmino this season wasn’t the fact that he wasn’t scoring enough goals, but that silky first touch he has was missing and, as a result, affecting the rest of his game.

But the Brazilian is lighter on his feet now, and whether he is scoring or not, he’s going to rip opposition defences to shreds.
