Liverpool are reportedly pursuing a deal for Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico.
According to ABC de Sevilla, Liverpool have spoken to Sevilla about striking a deal to sign goalkeeper Sergio Rico – but won’t pay his £26million release clause.
The Reds have already signed winger Mohamed Salah and striker Dominic Solanke, but there are question marks over the back line – and not just at left back and central defence.
Sevilla’s Sergio Rico celebrates
Goalkeeper Loris Karius was signed from Mainz last summer but failed to impress, meaning the unconvincing Simon Mignolet spent most of the season in goal despite the plan being for him to be replaced last season.
Now, ABC de Sevilla report that Liverpool have opened discussions with Sevilla over a move for goalkeeper Sergio Rico, in the hope of luring him to Anfield this summer.
It’s claimed that Liverpool are prepared to offer just €12million (£10.5million) for Rico, and they have no intention of paying the £26million release clause in his Sevilla contract.
Rico, 23, was born and bred in Sevilla, and joined the club’s ranks way back in 2006, making his way up through the age groups to eventually become Sevilla’s first-choice goalkeeper, with almost 150 appearances to his name.
Sevilla’s Sergio Rico looks dejected
A giant at 6ft 5in tall, Rico is a regular in the Spain national team squads but has just one cap to his name, and with huge potential to become one of the top goalkeepers in Europe, he could be a smart addition for Liverpool.
However, it seems unlikely that Liverpool would sign Rico without selling one of Karius or Mignolet, and with no alleged interest in either player, it’s hard to see a deal for Rico being anywhere near imminent.
