West Ham United fans should not get too despondent because they have a better squad than last season.
West Ham’s Adrian has moved to reassure fans
That’s according to number one goalkeeper and Spanish international Adrian, who is at a loss to explain their terrible start to the season in an interview with the club’s official website last week.
Four defeats from their first five Premier League games, Infighting amongst fans at their new 60,000 seater Olympic Stadium home, resentment towards owners and concerns over safety have soured the Hammers’ season so far.
Slaven Bilic‘s side have just one win to their name so far and even then they scraped past Bournemouth 1-0.
The Hammers were also embarrassingly dumped out of the Europa League by Romanian minnows Astra Giurgiu for the second season running.
Back-to-back 4-2 defeats to Watford and West Bromwich Albion have left the Hammers in the relegation zone.
West Ham United’s Adrian, Dimitri Payet and team mates look dejected
It is a far cry from last season when West Ham enjoyed their best ever points total of the Premier League era, recorded a first positive goal difference since 1986 and finished just four points off the Champions League places in their emotional farewell campaign at Upton Park.
Since then a huge turnaround of nearly 20 players has seen the squad transformed with 13 new signings and the likes of James Tomkins leaving for Crystal Palace.
But Adrian, who received his first call-up to the Spain squad in the last international break, has moved to reassure worried supporters.
West Ham have endured a terrible start to the season
“We have some players back on the team and we are stronger than last season,” he told whufc.com.
“We have won just one game from four but we have a great squad and we’ve signed some good players.”
Hammers supporters are a loyal bunch but they will not accept anything less than 100% commitment from their players on the pitch.
So while Adrian’s words may resonate for some, results and hard work are all the fans want to see at the moment.
West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic watches on as his side are beaten 4-2 at West Brom
That has to start with victory at the Olympic Stadium against League Two side in the League Cup on Wednesday night before Bilic’s side entertain Southampton in a crucial early season six-pointer on Sunday.
They then play their third consecutive home game with the visit of newly-promoted Middlesbrough the following weekend.
Win those three games and suddenly everything will be looking a lot rosier in West Ham’s garden.
