Why targeting Christian Pulisic instead of Gareth Bale and Ryan Sessegnon is a smart move for Spurs

Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been linked with all three wingers this summer.

It is no secret that Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for a winger this transfer window.

The Lilywhites have been linked with a whole host of wide men throughout the season, most notably Fulham‘s Ryan Sessegnon and former White Hart Lane hero, Gareth Bale.

But, with Sessegnon set to stay at Fulham following their promotion to the Premier League and Spurs ruling themselves out of launching a sensational bid to bring Bale back to England, Mauricio Pochetinno’s men are rumoured to have turned their interest towards Borussia Dortmund winger, Christian Pulisic.

A report by the Telegraph claims Spurs chairman Daniel Levy favours a move for the USA international due to his cheaper price – rumoured to be £50 million – and a desire to appeal to the American market even further, with Tottenham set to host a number of NFL games next season.

And while bringing in Sessegnon or Bale would certainly be more of a statement to Spurs’ rivals, signing Pulisic is the smarter move.

Pulisic is only 19 years old – one year older than Sessegnon and nine younger than Bale – meaning he has plenty of seasons ahead of him to mature and develop.

He also has experience playing in the Champions League – something Sessegnon is lacking – and would command a relatively low wage, with his reported weekly earnings sitting at just $23,000 according to Forbes – a snip considering Bale reportedly earns a whopping £350,000 after tax at Real Madrid.

Though he is primarily a left-sided player, Pulisic can play on the right or as an attacking midfielder and could be shifted around as part of a front three; something that will surely appeal to Pochetinno as he looks for the perfect support for Harry Kane.

Dortmund are undoubtedly a big club, but if a side of Spurs’ stature do come calling it’s hard to see Pulisic staying at the Westfalenstadion for too much longer.
