The Brazilian scored five goals in as many Champions League games for Liverpool before his January move to Barcelona.

Liverpool’s decision to give Philippe Coutinho a Champions League medal has split the opinion of Reds fans.

The Anfield club has decided to recognise Coutinho’s contribution towards Liverpool’s run to the final, despite the midfielder’s £142 million move to Barcelona in January.

Coutinho played a major part in the Reds reaching the knock-out stages of the competition, scoring five goals in the group stage, including a hat-trick in Liverpool’s 7-0 demolition of Spartak Moscow in December.

Awarding players European medals for their involvement is at the club’s discretion, and many Liverpool fans seem to disagree with the club’s decision given the unceremonious manner in which Coutinho left the club:

While many Liverpool fans may still feel sour towards Coutinho for swapping Anfield for the Camp Nou, the fact he contributed towards the club’s run to the final cannot be denied.

Coutinho’s mind may have been on a move to Barcelona in the group stages but it did not affect his performances, so the 25-year-old receiving a medal tomorrow should not be questioned.

Now it is down to Liverpool to ensure he receives a winners’ medal, rather than a runners-up prize.
