As the end of the season approaches, we take a look at the five players Opta stats say have been Tottenham Hotspur’s best this season.

It has been a rollercoaster season for Spurs, which looks likely to inevitably finish in sixth position.

Although, the money spent in the summer was supposed to push them further on up the league, and even help them compete for the title, I don’t believe it’s anywhere near as bad as some journalist and supporters have made out.

Andre Villa-Boas was sacked on the December 16 after a high-profile loss at the hands of now league leaders Liverpool. At the time, Tottenham were below both Manchester and Newcastle United, above whom they now sit. And no team below them, at that point, has gone on to move above them.

We take a look at the five players Opta stats suggest are key to the situation at White Hart Lane not being as gloomy as some people make out.

The results show just how out of form some of the key players at White Hart Lane have been this season, with the likes of Roberto Soldado, Jan Vertonghen and Paulinho all absent from the list.

Soldado and Erik Lamela unsurprisingly are towards the bottom of the squad list, with Soldado coming in at 22nd and Lamela 25th. Paulinho sits in 9th, Vertonghen 10th and Townsend 12th.

Kyle Walker, who is rated as 6th overall, sneaks ahead of Vlad Chiriches in 5th due to the amount of games played, otherwise the list is fairly conclusive.
