The former Ipswich Town and Scotland boss has confirmed he has applied to succeed Mick McCarthy at Portman Road.
Ipswich Town fans have taken to Twitter to react to news that former Blues boss George Burley is interested in the vacant managerial post at Portman Road.
Burley, who led Town to promotion in 2000 before guiding them to a fifth-placed finish in the Premiership the following season, revealed exclusively to the East Anglian Daily Times today that he has formally applied for the role, and that he wants fellow Tractor Boys legend Terry Butcher to be his assistant.
He said: “Everyone has kept asking me about it and, after much consideration, I’ve applied. And I’d have Terry Butcher working with me, too. Just like me he’s got the club in his blood, lives in Suffolk, and is desperate to see better times.
“People might say I have been out of the game for a while, but I have lived in Ipswich for the last four years and been at virtually every home game so I understand the current mood and what is required going forwards.
“I know it is not an easy job. I know there will be financial restraints in a tough league. And I know people might want to see a new face. But I do feel I have all the credentials and that the glove fits,” he added.
Ipswich fans are eager for the club to appoint a new boss sooner rather than later and many believe that Burley, who made almost 400 appearances for Town as a player, could bring the good times back to Portman Road:
Considering that Burley has not managed since a two-match spell at Cypriot side Appolon Limassol in 2012, it could be argued that bringing the Scot in for a second stint as Blues boss is a big risk for owner and chairman Marcus Evans.
That said, it could be a risk that pays off in dramatic fashion given Burley’s history at the club and his own desire to guide them back to the big time in 2019.
But, if Evans is looking for a manager with knowledge of the club, a track record of gaining promotion and an excellent relationship with the club’s supporters, then the 61-year-old could well be his man.
