Which midfielders Gareth Southgate should take to Russia this summer has been a hot topic this season, and Watford fans have thrown another name into the hat.

Hornets supporters have been waxing lyrical about former Derby County star Will Hughes after the 23-year-old turned in an impressive performance in Watford’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham on Monday night.

Hughes, who has scored two goals and contributed three assists in 13 Premier League outings this season, ran the show at Wembley, and since then Watford fans have taken to Twitter in their droves to praise him, with many saying he deserves a place in England’s World Cup squad:

England legend Gary Neville also lauded Hughes’ performance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, saying: “He has the grounding in the game you’d like – he’s got something about him and he’ll be on England’s radar.”

Southgate will have already been busy trying to choose a replacement for the injured Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and with his creativity, driving runs and impressive passing range, Hughes may be the right man to step in.

Another bonus for the Watford man is that he is no stranger to the England boss, as the pair worked together during Southgate’s three-year tenure as under-21 manager before he landed the senior role two years ago.

Hughes has been unlucky with injuries throughout his career, but it seems as though Watford’s £4.5 million signing is finding form at the perfect time if he is to be in contention for a place in Southgate’s squad this summer.
