Gary Neville has given his backing to Wayne Rooney’s potential move to DC United.

The Everton forward has been out of sorts since his return to Goodison at the start of the season and The Daily Mail has claimed the former England captain has agreed to join the MLS side in a £12.5 million deal.

A move across the pond would spell the end of a frustrating homecoming for Rooney, who has managed only 11 goals and three assists in 40 appearances.

And Neville, who spent seven years playing alongside Rooney at Manchester United, says moving stateside could be the perfect move for the 32-year-old.

He told Sky Sports: “I thought it was nice that he went back to Everton, but it never quite works when you go back.

“My view is that to experience something completely different would be a great thing for him – to get away and try something different.

“He’s got 30-35 years of his life to think about, coming pretty quickly. To experience different things, different culture, different environment, and to learn about new things is not a bad thing for him.”

He has won every title available at club level and has enjoyed a fine international career, but it’s clear that his time in the Premier League is up, and the MLS could be the perfect place to finish his playing days.

David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and co have all done their bit in helping the division soar in popularity in the US and Rooney would certainly add to that – as well as sending DC United’s shirt sales through the roof.
