The Welshman scored twice as Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 to lift their third consecutive Champions League trophy in Kiev.

Gareth Bale has been linked with a sensational return to Tottenham Hotspur this season – and Spurs fans are hoping his latest comments prove he wants to swap Real Madrid for north London this summer.

Bale has been largely used as a substitute by Zinedine Zidane this term and appeared to issue a come-and-get-me plea after he came off the bench to strike twice – including a stunning acrobatic first goal – to guide Real to a 3-1 success over Liverpool in Kiev.

He told BT Sport: “I need to be playing week in, week out and that hasn’t been happening for one reason or the other. I have to sit down and discuss with my agent in the summer and take it from there.

“I was very disappointed not to start the game – I felt like I deserved it.

“The best I could do is come on and make an impact and that’s what I did. I need to be playing week in, week out and that hasn’t happened this season.”

And Spurs fans have reacted in their droves to the winger’s comments, with many saying a move back to Mauricio Pochettino’s men is the way to go:

A Bale return may be on the top of most Spurs fans’ wish list this summer, but with his astronomical wages – reported to be £350,000-a-week by the Guardian – and a similarly hefty transfer fee, seeing the Welshman back in the white of Tottenham any time soon is unlikely.

What his comments are far more likely to result in is a new bumper contract at Real Madrid. Footballers often flirt with the idea of leaving a club to force their employers into action, and Bale could have just talked himself into another tasty pay rise.

Smart work, Gareth.
