Former Arsenal vice-chairman and fan’s favourite David Dein hinted the door may still be open to an Arsenal return after talking openly with a strong relationship with manager Arsene Wenger

Earlier in the year, Niall Quinn told talkSPORT that Arsenal should bring back former vice-chairman David Dein, commenting: ‘I am a great admirer of Arsenal Wenger and always will be.

I think he has been stifled. The day David Dein left the club was the day Arsenal became a commercial entity as opposed to a club that were really at the top of their game, in terms of getting players in and what have you.

‘If he was to stay [Wenger], bite the bullet and get David Dein back and give the supporters hope that Arsene can be given a fairer crack of the whip’

The comments made by Quinn have been fondly echoed by many Gooners over the recent past, many blaming his departure for their trophy-drought.

Nevertheless, in a rare interview with talkSPORT yesterday, the former vice-chairman hinted that the door is open to a possible Emirates return:

‘Well, that is very flattering, and you know, it’s been a love affair all my life with the club,’ said Dein.

‘Obviously, I had such a great working relationship with Arsene, because as most people know I had a social relationship with him for eight years.

‘We were, and still are good friends but before we had a professional [relationship], before he came to Arsenal, I knew him for eight years before that.

‘So, you know, the chemistry was right.’

After being pressed later in the interview for an answer to the question on a return to Arsenal, and whether he felt ‘frustrated’ at not being involved at the club, he added:

‘Well, my life has gone on and now do a lot of tours. I go around schools, prisons and businesses talking about football, a bit about my life and try and be motivational, inspirational. So, I go and see all the games that I can, I go to conferences and I’ll be in Brazil for the whole of the month. So, I’m seeing a lot of football around of the world still, and I’m enjoying it.”

The comments made by Dein are likely to come as a huge boost to Arsenal fans who, for the most part, would love to see the 71-year-old back at the club.

After all, he was credited with playing a huge part in bringing the likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Viera, Cesc Fabregas and Ian Wright to the club – the calibre of player Arsenal fans would love to see once again at their club.

He could be a huge asset to Arsenal this summer, not many would deny that. He still carries a reputation, a desire and a passion that many other board members could only dream of. Many could argue his return is a must, especially in light of his recent comments.
