Aaron Wan-Bissaka and James Maddison missed out on England call-ups yesterday.
England boss Gareth Southgate named his squad on Wednesday for upcoming games against the Czech Republic and Montenegro later this month.
Declan Rice earned a first call-up, but there were no call-ups for Crystal Palace right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka or Leicester City playmaker James Maddison.
Both decisions from Southgate left many flummoxed, as the pair have been hugely impressive in the Premier League this season – certainly more than Kieran Trippier or Ross Barkley.
The pair have been named in the England Under-21 squad, but that won’t be good enough for either player, and nor should it be.
One club who should be interested in this situation is Tottenham Hotspur. They need a right back given Trippier’s issues this season, and with questions over Christian Eriksen’s future, a playmaker like Maddison wouldn’t go amiss either.
The club you play for shouldn’t matter when it comes to international call-ups, but Tottenham can give a greater spotlight to Wan-Bissaka and Maddison, especially with so many Spurs players already in the England setup.
Wan-Bissaka, right now, is better than Trippier. He would surely replace him in the Spurs side, and then it would be almost impossible to deny him a spot over Trippier in the England squad.
Tottenham can give the duo European football and ergo testing themselves against the best in the world, which would be another string to their bow in search of England caps.
It may not be a major deal to either player, but Spurs should be presenting themselves to both players as the next step up domestically and as a way to nail down England spots – which is ultimately what the pair want.
