Gareth Southgate could reportedly drop AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham for the 2022 FIFA World Cup just days after reports emerged that Tottenham and Manchester United want to sign the England international.

According to Il Messaggero via GIFN, the 25-year-old is in danger of missing out on the World Cup next month in Qatar after a disastrous campaign for Jose Mourinho’s side, with Abraham scoring just two goals in all competitions after bagging 27 last season for the Italian giants.

With the likes of Ivan Toney and Callum Wilson impressing in the Premier League this season, there’s a good chance that Abraham could be dropped from Southgate’s final squad that will fly out to Qatar in November with the hopes of winning a second-ever World Cup.

The news will be a hammer blow for Abraham, who this week was linked with a move to Tottenham and United, with CalcioMercato reporting that the Premier League duo could move to sign the Roma star in the 2023 summer window, with the striker reportedly valued as high as £100m.

Whilst Tottenham and United might quietly be happy if Abraham doesn’t make it to Qatar as the competition can’t be used as a source for Roma to drive up his value even more should the former Chelsea star impress out in the Middle East, the forward being dropped could do a lot more damage than good.

Indeed, the mental toll of losing a World Cup spot after looking a sure-bet to win a spot on the plane could hit Abraham hard. And for the likes of Tottenham and United, they could actually want the 25-year-old to make it to Qatar if it helps the striker rediscover his form.

Harry Kane will likely start every game for England in Qatar barring another third-place match, yet for a player like Abraham, heading to the World Cup could spark the striker back into life and inspire the Roma star to find his best form, which will be a great sign for Tottenham and United.

After all, with Abraham reportedly valued at £100m, neither side will want to spend a club-record fee on an attacker who won’t guarantee goals and improve their respective squads, which is why a World Cup place is now important for both Tottenham and United heading into next summer.
