Southend United boss Phil Brown has told the Southend Echo that Sunderland is his dream job having supported the club his entire life.
Sunderland drew 3-3 at home with Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night, as their torrid home form continued under Simon Grayson.
Just five minutes after the final whistle at the Stadium of Light, Grayson’s departure was confirmed, as Sunderland decided time was up for him, despite only luring him from Preston in June.
Grayson’s four-month tenure was far from impressive, winning just once in 15 Championship games, but Sunderland simply can’t afford to keep sacking managers as they search for stability.
The search is now on for Grayson’s successor, just a matter of months after David Moyes left his position as manager at the end of last season.
A host of names are already being touted for the job, but one man who may have thrown his hat into the ring is Southend United manager Phil Brown.
Brown – who is 25/1 for the Sunderland job with Sky Bet – has told the Southend Echo that the job at the Stadium of Light is his dream, having supported the club for more than 50 years.
Brown didn’t go as far as to say that he wanted the job, but did note that he thinks Sunderland are a very big club, and it’s not nice to see them suffer such a torrid spell.
“Sunderland are my football club and being the manager of Sunderland would be my dream job because of that,” said Brown. “I have supported Sunderland for more than 50 years and would go and watch them when I was a kid with a black, red and white scarf tied round my wrist like everyone seemed to do back then.”
“I have fond memories of that time and it’s a very big club. But for whatever reason they’re going through a torrid time at the moment and it’s not very nice to see,” he added.
