Newcastle United would certainly be taking a risk signing the injury-stricken Southampton frontman Jay Rodriguez.

Its three years since a cruel cruciate ligament blow ruled Jay Rodriguez out of England’s 2014 World Cup squad. The Southampton forward was in the form of his life on the South Coast and appeared certain to at least make the initial cut as Roy Hodgson’s prepared a squad capable of bringing the party to Rio.
We all know how that turned out.
And, flash forwards to the present day, it’s fair to say Rodriguez has never quite recaptured the brilliance that earned him an England debut in a 2-0 Wembley defeat against Chile in November 2013.
After just twelve appearances, and no goals, after that prolific 2013/14 campaign, Rodriguez is only now starting to find some form. He’s got five strikes in nine Premier League starts this season, the latest an eye-catching volley against Middlesbrough that reminded everyone of his Hodgson-impressing heyday.
Nonetheless, Newcastle United would still be taking a major risk bringing him to St James’ Park this summer. The Chronicle reports that the 27-year-old’s representatives have been in touch with The Magpies regarding a potential switch from the South coast to the far North.

However, the fact that Rodriguez has started just 12 top flight games in two seasons may set off a few alarm bells. After all, Newcastle have been bitten before when signing injury-prone forwards. Yes, Michael Owen and Albert Luque, we’re looking at you.
New fans’ favourite?
On the other hand, Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez is reportedly in the market for a proven Premier League striker. And, when fit, Rodriguez has proved emphatically that he has the speed, the skill and the dead-eyed finishing the comfortably hit double figures in the top flight.
Furthermore, his versatility would make him a major asset to Newcastle’s forward line. Not only could he offer some much-needed competition for Dwight Gayle at the tip of the attack, he could also fill in on the left hand side, cutting in onto that dangerous right foot.

With Yoan Gouffran set to leave, Rodriguez could be a quicker, more exciting upgrade.
Fitness permitting, Rodriguez could solve two problem positions for Newcastle.
