Southampton’s hopes of Paco Alcacer move surely dealt blow

Southampton have reportedly already entered talks with Barcelona over a January deal for Paco Alcacer.

According to a report from the Daily Mirror back in October, Southampton had opened talks with Barcelona striker Paco Alcacer as Mauricio Pellegrino attempted to bolster the Saints’ attacking options.

It has been another frustrating season for Southampton so far when it comes to going forward. They go into the international break with just nine goals scored in 11 top flight games and surely cannot allow the January window to pass without a new striker being signed.

It appears that the Saints are hoping that Alcacer can be that man, with the Mirror reporting that they have been in talks with the Catalan giants over a deal for the 24-year-old, who has endured a difficult time since moving to the Nou Camp.

But perhaps his latest display puts some doubt on whether Southampton will be able to land the Spaniard during the upcoming window.

Alcacer, who was making only his second La Liga start of the season, scored both of Barcelona’s goals as they beat Sevilla 2-1 at the Nou Camp to ensure that they went into the international break four points clear at the top of the table.

Barca may still be open to letting Alcacer go, but it would undoubtedly not be a surprise if that one performance has meant that they have now changed their mind and want to keep the former Valencia man at the club beyond January.

If that proves to be the case, Pellegrino and Les Reed surely need to start considering alternative targets quickly because letting January come and go without strengthening their attacking options would surely be a massive mistake.
