Tyreke Johnson, Dan N’Lundulu and Josh Sims scored a brace apiece for the Saints in Friday night’s Premier League Cup 6-2 win over the Magpies.
Southampton Under-23s manager Radhi Jaidi has hailed his charges for their emphatic 6-2 win over their Notts County counterparts in Friday night’s Premier League Cup clash with Notts County.
The Saints coach also singled out his side’s three goalscorers on the night – Tyreke Johnson, Dan N’Lundulu and Josh Sims – for praise, before moving on to the overall display of the team, who remain with a shout of qualifying from Group H.
Southampton started brightly against the Magpies and got off the mark after just two minutes, with Sims’s cutback for Johnson culminating in a first-time finish, although the visitors did level through Sam Osborne.
Sims turned from provider to score as he finally broke Max Culverwell’s rearguard after the Notts goalkeeper had made several smart saves, and from then on the floodgates opened, with Johnson, N’Lundulu and Sims ending the game with a brace apiece, although the team conceded once more as Will Patching netted for Notts.
Although Southampton’s Premier League Cup fate remains in the balance, pending the result of Group H’s final fixture between Leeds and Newcastle, Jaidi couldn’t be happier with how his charges performed.
“Tyreke had a standout game, and Josh Sims, who has been away for a period was excellent,” he told the official club website. “I also can’t deny Dan N’Lundulu who has come back from a long-term injury with two good goals. I couldn’t ask for more. I think the boys did everything they could have tonight.
“The goals are great; they came from the work on the training ground. The areas we’ve worked on all week, exploiting space in behind, you could see that tonight. There’s always things to work on but six goals, and hopefully that keeps the confidence and spirit high.”
