Southampton are reportedly working on a deal to sign KRC Genk striker Paul Onuachu, with the Nigerian international also linked with a move to Manchester United this January.

According to Het Nieuwsblad, the Saints are yet to give up on bringing the 28-year-old forward to the Premier League as Nathan Jones looks to add another attacking signing to his ranks, with Onuachu the highest-scoring player in Belgium this season with 17 goals in all competitions.

Jeunes Footeux had reported earlier in the month that the likes of United, Everton and Aston Villa were also interested in signing Onuachu, however, it is Southampton who have now taken a convincing lead in the race for the Genk superstar.

With just one day of the transfer window left, Southampton will have to work fast if they’re to secure a deal for Onuachu, who could be a signing that saves the Saints from Premier League relegation as well as reboots Jones’ tenure as manager of the south coast side.

Onuachu has been linked with a Premier League move for quite some time, yet with Southampton now pushing hard to bring the Genk star to England, now is as good a time as any for the African sensation to make his mark in the Premier League, where the Saints will be more than grateful for his services.

With 17 goals in all competitions this season, a realistic claim could be made that Onuachu might be the player who turns Southampton’s season around, and the forward could be one of the best moves this deadline day if Jones and his team can complete a deal in the coming hours.
