Southampton are weighing up a move for Basel and Norway winger Mohamed Elyounoussi, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Elyounoussi, who can play out wide or up front, has enjoyed a fantastic season with Basel, scoring 10 goals and laying on 11 assists in 29 games in the Swiss Super League.

The 22-year-old joined Basel last summer Molde after scoring 42 goals in 92 appearances for the Norwegian club and he has quickly established himself as Basel’s star man.

Elyounoussi’s performances for club and country over the past 12 months have not gone unnoticed among clubs in bigger European leagues.

Leicester have previously been linked with a move for Elyounoussi, but now Southampton have joined the chase for the exciting attacker.

Southampton boss Claude Puel is keen to add to his attacking options for next season after bemoaning their lack of cutting edge in front of goal with the Saints among the lowest scorers in the Premier League with only 41 goals so far this season.

Southampton scouts have watched Elyounoussi in action on several occasions this season and the Norwegian would add some attacking guile to their side.

Basel are reluctant to lose Elyounoussi and are bracing themselves for interest in the attacking midfielder this summer.
