Bournemouth allegedly want to sign the Chelsea midfielder, but he’d be perfect for Southampton.
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhüttl will surely be keen to bolster his central midfield ranks at St Mary’s before the transfer window closes on Thursday, having already lost Steven Davis on loan to Rangers earlier this month.
With this in mind, the Saints should consider making a move for Chelsea midfield ace Danny Drinkwater, who is attracting interest from Bournemouth, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
The 28-year-old joined the Blues from Leicester City in the summer of 2017 for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £35 million, according to BBC Sport, but he has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular at Stamford Bridge, making just five Premier League starts.
That isn’t to say that he doesn’t still have a lot to offer at the highest level, however.
Drinkwater played a key role for Leicester during their incredible Premier League title win during the 2015/16 campaign, and should he rediscover that form, he would be an excellent addition for Southampton.
The three-capped England international usually operates in the deep-lying midfield role, and his excellent range of passing enables him to control the tempo of the game.
Drinkwater would add some much-needed composure to Southampton’s engine room, but he also does the less fashionable things well, such as breaking up play.
The Daily Mail claims that Bournemouth want the Chelsea man on loan, so the Saints should have no trouble in challenging them for his signature.
And if Hasenhüttl does manage to bring the midfielder to St Mary’s, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for Southampton.
