Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez celebrates scoring their first goal
Crystal Palace are reportedly weighing up a summer move for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez.
According to reports from The Mirror, Rodriguez has fallen down the pecking order at St Mary’s and the forward could be allowed to leave the club.
The former Burnley striker joined Southampton in 2012 and till date has made 98 Premier League appearances for the club, scoring 25 goals.
Rodriguez signed a new contract extension in 2015 that runs till 2019. However, the Saints may not be keen to offer him a new deal this time around.
The versatile forward, who can play in all the three positions upfront, and also as a striker, has made only eight starts in the Premier League this season, and has four goals to his name.
He is already behind Charlie Austin and Shane Long in the pecking order, while January signing Manolo Gabbiadini’s brilliant form has hindered his hopes of regular football under Claude Puel.
The report suggests that Palace are monitoring Rodriguez’s situation and are ready to make a move for him in the summer.
Sam Allardyce will be keen to rebuild the squad in the summer, and should make a move for Rodriguez.
The 27-year-old is a versatile player with wealth of Premier League experience. He will bring a different quality to the side, and given his contract situation, should be available at an affordable price.
