Yeovil Town are interested in signing the Southampton prospect on a permanent basis.
Much of the focus during the transfer window with regards to Premier League clubs is on incomings but some important decisions also need to be made regarding players who could possibly leave.
Southampton, for instance, must decide whether to retain the services of Olufela Olomola, who has been hugely impressive on loan at Yeovil Town this season, or allow the striker to join the League Two club on a permanent basis.
Olomola has scored seven goals in League Two this campaign and his loan deal is set to end this month, with Yeovil eager to keep him, either on a temporary basis or permanently.
Yeovil manager Darren Way told the club’s official website: “I feel it’s right Fela remains at this football club. It’s important the stability he has here is good – with Fela it’s connected. For me as a manager I need to do everything I can to keep Fela.
“Whether it’s a loan or permanent is down to Southampton as he’s contracted to them until the end of the season. If it’s permanent and there’s a fee, then that’s what we’ll have to do.”
Breaking into the Southampton first-team in the longterm will be a difficult task for Olomola, but he should certainly be given an opportunity to prove his worth for Mauricio Pellegrino’s team, especially given that current resources are rather limited.
The 20-year-old is an exciting prospect and it would certainly be a mistake for Southampton to allow him to depart without first giving him a chance to make an impact.
Perhaps the best option would be for Olomola to extend his loan at Yeovil until the end of the season before being part of the Southampton first-team squad next campaign.
