The Udinese defender has been linked with a move to Southampton.

Southampton are aiming to strengthen their squad this month and one player who has been linked with a move to the club is Udinese defender Silvan Widmer.
The right-back is the subject of interest from Southampton, and a deal could happen before the closure of the transfer window.
Widmer, who has been capped seven times by Switzerland at senior level, has thrived as a right wing-back for Udinese this season and provides a frequent attacking threat in addition to being dependable defensively.

At the age of 24, Widmer still has time to improve further and if he was to join Southampton he would provide them with a useful extra option at right-back to compete with Cedric Soares.
Soares is firmly established as Southampton’s first-choice option at right-back but his main competitor for the position, Jeremy Pied, has endured much misfortune with injuries.

While it would be rather harsh on Pied if he was to be sold, perhaps the best option would be to loan him out so that he can build up his fitness with regular playing time elsewhere, while Widmer could be brought in to, hopefully, make an immediate impact for Southampton.
Widmer could also potentially be deployed as a right winger and would be an impressive addition to Southampton’s squad as they look to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
