The Leeds United hitman would be a useful addition to the Southampton squad this summer.
Saints boss Maurcio Pellegrino will surely be looking to bolster his attacking options at St Mary’s this summer, as he looks to guide his side to a successful Premier League campaign this season.
Southampton finished eighth in the table last term, but their woeful tally of just 41 league goals scored prevented them from finishing even higher.
With this in mind, the addition of a proven centre-forward will surely feature highly on Pellegrino’s wish-list, to help supplement the skill-set of Manolo Gabbiadini, and an useful option for them could be Leeds United hitman Chris Wood.
The 25-year-old striker was sensational for the Whites last season, scoring 27 goals in 44 Championship outings. He showcased various different facets to his game on a consistent basis, including aerial prowess, strength in the challenge and his potent nature in front of goal.
The New Zealand international would be the ideal strike partner for Gabbiadini, and he would provide Pellegrino with the opportunity to play two strikers through the middle, should he so wish.
Wood could be available for around £20 million this summer, according to the Sun, and that would represent fantastic value for the Saints, in today’s currently inflated transfer market.
One potential concern for Southampton, however, will be questions over whether the Leeds man can replicate his Championship form in the Premier League, but there is only one way to find out.
And for just £20 million, it is surely worth the risk for the south coast club.
