Southampton are third favourites for the Dutchman but Everton are said to be very keen on the 24-year-old.
According to a recent report from the Mirror, Everton manager Ronald Koeman is keen to bring Ajax midfielder Davey Klaassen to Goodison Park this summer, but his former employers Southampton would be wise to do everything they can to seal a deal ahead of the Toffees.
According to bookmakers Ladbrokes, Southampton are third favourites to sign Klaassen – behind Everton and Liverpool – and while it would take some negotiating to convince the 24-year-old to ignore the overtures from Merseyside for a stint on the south coast, he is exactly the type of player who would excel at St. Mary’s.
Klaassen has scored 16 goals and provided seven assists in 35 appearances for Ajax this season, which is a superb record for a midfielder, albeit an attacking one.
Southampton are playing some outstanding football under manager Claude Puel and for once the Saints supporters will be hoping they can strengthen their squad without losing any of their star names this summer.
Whatever happens, bringing in more great players is vital and Klaassen would be the perfect addition for a Southampton side heading in only one direction.
With a contract that expires in 2019 the Dutchman could come relatively cheap, while his experience of captaining Ajax would be invaluable as Southampton look to make the next step and challenge the top six in the Premier League.
If they could convince him to ignore Everton’s alleged advances, it would also get one over their former boss, significantly strengthening Southampton’s already impressive attacking options in the process.
