With the transfer window open there is much speculation regarding potential deals and one player who has been linked with a switch to Southampton is Arsenal winger Theo Walcott.

Walcott has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal and, as reported by The London Evening Standard, is the subject of interest from Southampton, where he broke through in spectacular fashion as a teenager.

It is clear that Walcott hasn’t developed into the player that many hoped he would become when he joined Arsenal, but the 28-year-old would still have a lot to offer for Southampton if he did return to the club.

Walcott’s directness would add a lot to Southampton’s game, while he managed to score 19 goals in 37 games across all competitions last season.

Southampton, with Nathan Redmond struggling for form, are in need of directness and inspiration and Walcott, if he can recapture his best form, is capable of providing those qualities.

Currently in 17th place in the Premier League, and above the relegation zone only on goal difference, it is clear that much improvement is required from Southampton in the second half of the season, and the signings that they make this month will be hugely important in terms of determining whether they stay up.

Bringing in Walcott would certainly be a step forwards.
