The Newcastle United hitman would be ideal for Southampton.

Ralph Hasenhuttl the head coach

Southampton narrowly avoided relegation down to the Championship this season, and Ralph Hasenhuttl has a lot of work to do this summer, if he is to guide his side to an improved campaign next term.

One area in particular where the Saints need to strengthen is their centre-forward department, with a lack of goals proving to be really troublesome for them this season.

And with this in mind, Southampton should make a move for Newcastle United hitman Dwight Gayle, who could be available for just £20 million this summer, according to the London Evening Standard.

The 28-year-old, who currently earns £40,000 per week according to Spotrac, enjoyed a successful loan spell with West Brom this season, racking up 24 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions, and he is just the type of player who the Saints need.

Gayle is a lethal finisher, and he would undoubtedly help Southampton improve upon the potency of their play in the final third next term.

The former Crystal Palace hitman is experienced in applying at the very highest level, and he would give Hasenhuttl an entirely different option through the middle in the final third.

Dwight Gayle controls the ball during the Newcastle United Pre Season Training Session at the Sporting Clube de Braga on July 30, 2018, in Braga, Portugal.

In today’s day and age, £20 million doesn’t get you much, so Southampton really should jump at the chance to sign Gayle.

His goals could make all the difference for the south coast outfit next season.
