The Genoa midfielder is soon to be out of contract and Southampton may be wise to reignite their interest.

According to a report from the Daily Star back in November, Southampton were keen to sign Genoa midfielder Miguel Veloso in the January transfer window, and while a move did not come to fruition, could they bag a bargain this summer?

After all, in just a few short months Veloso will be available on a free transfer, and while he is now 30 he could offer some additional experience in the centre of the park for Claude Puel’s side.

Last year, the Star claimed Southampton had watched the Portugal international on a number of occasions, and if they remain interested they may be smart to move quickly or risk losing him to another suitor in the close season.

Predominantly a holding midfielder who can also operate further up the field or as a left-back if required, Veloso would be a welcome addition to a Southampton side that continues to impress despite yet another change of manager.

The proved their quality by outplaying Manchester United in the recent EFL Cup final and while Southampton lost that day, they could still be an enticing project if Veloso finally wants a crack at the Premier League.

He has bags of experience at the top level and may feel he has one big move left in his career after previously impressing at Sporting Lisbon and Dynamo Kiev prior to his switch to Italy.
