Everton travel to Southampton on Sunday and don’t have a good record at St Mary’s Stadium.
Everton’s season reached a new low on Thursday as they were thrashed 5-1 by Atalanta in the Europa League.
David Unsworth’s chances of landing the permanent manager’s job took a massive hit with that result, but the caretaker boss will be demanding a response when the Toffees travel to Southampton on Sunday.
However, Everton’s recent record away to the Saints suggests things may go from bad to worse.
The Merseysiders have won on just one of their last eight trips to St Mary’s Stadium – a 3-0 victory in August 2015 when Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley were the scorers – and have lost four of the other seven encounters.
The Lukaku-inspired victory was a rare goal glut for Everton at Southampton, who usually leave their scoring boots behind when they travel to the South Coast. They have fired blanks on eight of their last 12 visits.
That statistic will be particularly alarming for Everton considering that they are missing top scorer Oumar Niasse, who has over half of the club’s league goals from open play this season, but is controversially banned for diving.
Unsworth will be hoping that history does not repeat itself this weekend, otherwise he could be history himself.
