The young Southampton striker has been impressive at U23 level this season.
Southampton have earned much praise for the work that they have done at academy level in recent years, with the club producing players including Gareth Bale, Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The Premier League side have some very exciting youngsters currently on their books and amongst them is striker Jonathan Afolabi, who has been hugely impressive this season.
Afolabi isn’t technically a product of Southampton’s academy, having joined from St. Josephs Boys in 2016, but he has developed significantly since making the switch to the south coast club.
This season Afolabi, who is most effective as a striker but can also be deployed on the left wing if required, has scored four goals in ten appearances for Southampton at U23 level, while he has also provided two assists.
In addition, the 17-year-old has also featured in the EFL Trophy, setting up two goals in as many games.
An Irish youth international, he is quick and skillful and certainly possesses the potential to eventually challenge for a place in the Southampton first-team squad.
For now, Afolabi will continue to develop at U23 level and, as he becomes stronger physically and increasingly tactically aware, he will progress even more.
