Southampton’s owner moved to allay fears regarding the club’s future today.

Southampton owner Katharina Liebherr delivered a strong message to the club’s fans in an open letter, following news of Chinese company Lander Sports Development today announcing to the Shenzhen stock exchange that they’ve agreed a deal to buy a stake in the Saints’ parent company, as reported by the Daily Star.

Liebherr, who inherited ownership of the Saints from her father in 2010, penned an open letter to the club’s fans, in an attempt to assure them that the future is bright, as quoted by the Daily Star:

“I am writing to you in relation to an announcement made in China today about Southampton Football Club and Lander Holding. I can assure you that any steps we do take will be in the best interests of the club. A potential partnership would need to clear multiple approvals and fulfil strict criteria before being confirmed. The Premier League is increasingly competitive; we need to keep moving forward and look to new markets for commercial growth, innovation and to share our journey.”

So many of Southampton’s best players have been sold over the past few years, and there is a feeling that if they are to actually progress as a football club, they will need outside investment in order for them to be able to compete with the bigger clubs in the Premier League, from a financial aspect at least.

They currently sit in 11th position in the Premier League table, after an underwhelming first half of their campaign, but their win over Leicester City on Sunday has injected a certain level of confidence back into the club.

And Saints fans will be reassured by their club’s owner’s words, as they look to continue their development as a football club.
