Southampton have sacked Nathan Jones after just three months in charge having lost 2-1 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

The Saints really needed three points on Saturday and they did take a 1-0 lead through January signing Carlos Alcaraz.

Mario Lemina’s red card should have given Southampton the platform to go on and win the game – but they collapsed instead.

Jan Bednarek’s comical own goal handed Wolves an equaliser and new signing Joao Gomes scored a late winner for the visitors.

Fans voiced their anger at the full-time whistle as they loudly booed, with Jones now paying the price with his job.

Jones only made the move from Luton Town in November as a replacement for Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Yet with nine defeats and just five wins in 14 games in charge, Jones has been given his marching orders and Southampton need to find another manager.

Southampton allegedly like former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch as Nathan Jones departs

It’s unclear who Southampton will now target as their next manager but one rumour earlier this season suggested they like Jesse Marsch.

The Times reported in October that Southampton fancied luring Marsch away from Leeds United and down to the South Coast.

That move didn’t materialise as Southampton went with Jones instead, but maybe the Saints have retained their interest in Marsch.

The American coach was sacked by Leeds just a few days ago and is now available to move on.

Paying to get him out of Leeds as a replacement for Ralph Hasenhuttl may not have appealed, but moving for him now seems a little more realistic.

Southampton’s interest may well have waned after Marsch’s struggles at Leeds but with the Saints needing a quick solution, the former Red Bull Salzburg coach could be in contention for a swift Premier League return.
