Southampton are reportedly keen on signing the free agent.
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will be keen to bolster his attacking ranks at St Mary’s this summer.
In spite of the fact that they are closing in on the signing of Che Adams (The Telegraph), further firepower will be required.
According to the Sun, one of the Austrian’s transfer targets is Danny Welbeck, who is available on a free transfer this summer, but the Saints should steer clear of the Englishman.
The former Arsenal man has experienced horrendous problems with injury since joining the Gunners in 2014, and he managed just 46 Premier League starts during his time at the Emirates.
Southampton need a prolific striker – one who is robust and able to play the majority of the season without picking up niggling injuries.
And the 42-capped England international certainly isn’t that man.
Throughout his career, Welbeck has scored just 70 goals in 311 appearances – really underwhelming figures for an attacking player.
The 28-year-old is available on a free transfer, so that will undoubtedly appeal to Southampton, but considering his recent struggles, the south coast outfit could, and should, do better.
If the Saints truly want to make some real progress next season, Hasenhuttl will have to spend some serious cash, and avoid making penny-pinching moves for players who are well past their best.
That might seem a little harsh on Welbeck, but there is no sentiment in football, and Southampton need to be more ruthless in their player recruitment over the next few years.
