The Liverpool hitman could turn out to be an excellent addition for Southampton.
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhüttl will surely be desperate to bring a recognised striker into St Mary’s this month, especially after selling Manolo Gabbiadini to Sampdoria.
The Austrian’s current options – Shane Long, Charlie Austin and Danny Ings are far from prolific, and a lack of goals could very well threaten their Premier League status.
With his in mind, the Saints should consider a move for Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge, despite the obvious risk that it would entail.
The 29-year-old is one of the finest finishers in the game, but he has hardly featured for the Reds this season, making just two Premier League starts, and according to the Mirror, he wants to leave Anfield in search of more regular first-team action.
Sturridge has suffered horrendous luck with injuries over the past few years, but if he manages to remain fit for the rest of the season he could prove to be the difference between Southampton staying up or getting relegated.
The 26-capped England international does most of his work in and around the 18-yard box – something that makes him ideally suited to play alongside Danny Ings.
The pair also know each other from their time spent together at Liverpool, and they could forge a devastating partnership at St Mary’s.
Sturridge has scored 111 in 303 career appearances, and he would be well capable of notching at least 10 for Southampton between now and the end of the season.
Quite how much Liverpool would expect for his services remains to be see, but the Saints should test their resolve nevertheless.
And should Hasenhùttl manage to bring the Englishman to St Mary’s, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for Southampton.
