Southampton have decided on bringing in a new centre-back as their transfer priority this summer following on from their 4-1 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup.

According to the Athletic, the Saints are keen on improving their options at the back, with a centre-back being viewed as an important position to strengthen if Southampton are to reach the next level under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

As per the report, though, it is likely that one of Southampton’s four centre-back options will have to leave St. Mary’s if the club are to sign a central defender this summer, with the likes of Mohammed Salisu and Jan Bednarek being linked with moves away from the Saints.

Despite sitting 11th in the Premier League table, Southampton have had a poor defensive record, with clubs lower in the standings such as Crystal Palace, Brighton and even Burnley all conceding less than Hasenhuttl’s side.

Indeed, a new centre-back could be perfect for Southampton given their lack of quality options in the position, and whilst the likes of Salisu and Bednarek have impressed in patches this season, an upgrade on either player could be ideal for the Saints.

The upcoming transfer window is set to be a huge one for the south coast side, and a new centre-back could be the missing piece for Hasenhuttl’s men if they are to take things to the next level in both the Premier League and domestic competitions.

Next season will be a defining one for Southampton under Hasenhuttl, and a new centre-back will be key to how the Austrian manager lays out his plan to push the Saints beyond a mid-table finish.

Depending on exits, Southampton will have to be smart in who they sign as a new centre-back, and with money likely to be available, the Saints have the potential to land someone truly special if they play their cards right this off-season.
